How to Choose an Engagement Ring That Feels Personal

Choosing an engagement ring is one of the most meaningful decisions you’ll make — not just because it’s a beautiful piece of jewellery, but because it’s a symbol of your love story. I believe the most special rings are the ones that feel personal; pieces that reflect your partner’s style, personality, and the life you’re building together.

If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few tips to help you choose a ring that feels truly personal:

1. Think About Their Style

Take a moment to consider what your partner loves. Do they wear delicate, minimal jewellery or something bold and eye-catching? Are they drawn to yellow gold or white gold? If they wear rings already, take a look at the shapes and finishes they gravitate towards — this will give you clues.

2. Consider the Stone Shape

Different stone shapes can say different things. Oval and pear shapes often feel elegant and soft, while emerald cuts are beautifully clean and sophisticated. Round brilliant cuts are timeless classics, while radiant or cushion cuts can feel a little more unique but still romantic. There’s no right or wrong — it’s all about what feels like ‘them.’

3. Choosing the Right Metal

At JUNI, I work exclusively with yellow gold and white gold, available in both 9ct and 18ct. Yellow gold has a beautiful warmth and a classic, romantic feel that never goes out of style. White gold, on the other hand, feels sleek, fresh, and modern. Both are wonderful choices — it just comes down to what suits your partner’s style and what they’ll love wearing every day.

4. Add Meaningful Details

Little details can make all the difference. Whether it’s a hidden gemstone on the inside of the band, an engraving of initials or a special date, or choosing a gemstone with meaning (perhaps their birthstone or a colour that holds sentimental value) — these touches make the ring feel entirely unique.

5. Consider Going Custom

A custom design allows you to tell your story through the ring. If you have ideas or want to combine certain elements — a particular stone shape with a setting that nods to a special moment — I’ll work with you to bring that vision to life. The result is a piece that’s designed just for your partner, with every detail considered.

6. Your Story Matters

Ultimately, the ring you choose should feel like a reflection of your relationship. Maybe you met by the sea and want to include a soft aquamarine accent, or you’ve shared a love for travel and want a design that feels adventurous. These little nods to your story make the piece something to treasure forever.

7. If in Doubt, Ask for Help

If you’re unsure where to start, I’m always here to guide you. Whether it’s discussing stone options, showing examples, or helping you figure out their ring size without giving the game away — it’s all part of the process.
